Friday Tours - 2022 Jackrabbit Bar Conference

Attendees will join Mike Headley, Executive Director of the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF), and the South Dakota Science and Technology Authority to travel down the the Yates Shaft via a special cage hoist to 4,850 feet where the Davis Campus is located. The Davis Campus was dedicated in 2012 as the deepest underground science facility in the US.

"I was here when we gained access to the underground and for initial dewatering. I had been fortunate enough to visit Soudan Lab in Minnesota, Gran Sasso in Italy and SNO Lab in Canada, so I had a pretty good picture of what the Davis Campus could become. You could say its like buying a home. You have to look past the flaws—the pink walls and bad carpet. We had to get past the muck and leftovers from when the site was 300 feet underwater and envision what it could be."

*Underground notes:

• The Sanford Facility Tour takes attendees 4850 feet down into the mine in order to tour the campus. If you're not comfortable with elevators, tight spaces, etc., we do not suggest this tour for you. Attendees will be required to attend a safety briefing and sign a waiver prior to the tour. 
• Temperatures will be in the low- to mid-70s at the Davis Campus. The lab will provide ppe (coveralls, hardhats, cap lamps, safety glasses, etc.). For safety purposes guests are required to wear clothing that is appropriate at a constructions site: full-length pants or jeans, and sturdy, close-toe shoes are required.
• Restrooms are available underground.
• Cameras are welcome.
• Personal items such as laptops, briefcases, purses, etc. should be left at your hotel or can be left in the conference room in the education building.

Attendees will meet at Old Style Saloon #10 to join Kim, a long term resident of Deadwood and local historian for an informative history tour, with ghost sighting stories mixed in.
